MMA Flashback: Lashley Blitzes Cook In Maximum Fighting Challenge Main Event

October 12, 2009 by Ross Everett · Leave a Comment

Heres a word of advice to future opponents of Bobby Lashley”dont make fun of his background in professional wrestling. Mike Cook found that out the hard way in the co-main event of the Maximum Fighting Championships MFC 21: Hard Knocks event. After spending the run up to fight week making fun of Lashleys tenure in the WWE, Cook lasted a mere :24 seconds before being choked unconscious.

In prefight interviews, Cook had suggested that Lashley would soil himself once he entered the ring (though in not so erudite terms). That clearly incensed the massive 64 250 pound Lashley, who despite his inexperience in MMA is hardly the sort of individual prone to losing bowel control at the prospect of a fight.

A smirking Cook attempted to tap gloves with Lashley before the fight, but his obviously insulted opponent would have none of it. Even after the opening bell rang, Cooks arrogant approach to the fight continued as he immediately clinched with his opponent as if he had no regard whatsoever for Lashleys strength. Lashley immediately locked in a guillotine choke and basically yanked Cook down to the mat by his head. Once on the canvas, Lashley cinched it in deeper as Cook flopped around”partially in an effort to escape, partially in an involuntary muscle reaction as he sunk into unconsciousness. Cook didnt even get the chance to tap out as veteran referee Big John McCarthy recognized he was out cold and pulled Lashley off of him.

After the fight Lashley gave his opponent a hug and flashed his trademark megawatt smile as if to say I told you so. In his postfight interview, however, he did slip in a final verbal jab toward his vanquished opponent saying that he didnt come to play and that he is all business before quipping that now Cook can go put the mask back on and have fun with himself’.

Despite the fact that mixed martial arts and professional wrestling have been interwoven from the beginning, the American Top Team trained Lashley has been singled out by less knowledgeable fans for his tenure in the WWE. Against his next opponent, Bob Sapp, hell be facing a foe that has also spent some time in the worked environment of professional wrestling. In addition to his legit fighting experience in K-1 and PRIDE, Sapp has worked for several Japanese pro wrestling organizations and briefly held the prestigious IWGP Championship. The IWGP title has been held by pro wrestling legends such as Keiji The Great Muta Mutoh, Antonio Inoki and Tatsumi Fujinami, as well as reigning UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Even though Sapps days as a serious fighter are long past and he likely spends less time in the gym during a given year than Lashley does in a month, he does present an element of danger. Hes still got decent punching power, and his sheer bulk will be a challenge for Lashley who could give up as much as 100 pounds come fight night. Still, Sapps only victories in several years have been against overmatched and/or outsized opponents. In his last fight against an opponent of similar stature he was destroyed in under a minute by Jan Nortje who entered the matchup with a 1-6 career MMA record. Sapp remains a hugely popular personality in Japan, however, and simply by fighting him Lashleys marketability in the lucrative Japanese fight sport market increases significantly.

That is great, but probably the most important type of foods that build muscle are foods containing high levels of protein. Foods like meat, fish, chicken, eggs, cheese and other milk products. Nuts are also a great protein source.

There is an optimum amount of protein that your body needs for building muscle effectively. Do you know your lean body mass weight? Yes? Great! Carbohydrates are also important foods that build muscle – or rather carbs are important components of foods that build muscle. Choose foods that are high in carbohydrates that are also high in fibre – oatmeal, rice, and potato are all good.

Fats need to be reduced when you are consider what foods build muscle mass. Most foods that contain protein also contains fat, so when choosing your proteins, providing you opt for the ones that are low in fat, you will be on the right track.

When eating to build muscle, make sure you drink water. Liquid is important for hydration, and a dehydrated body is sluggish, and can even make you sick. This is not a recipe for obtaining the healthy, fit physique you are striving for.

Most experts agree that between 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day helps flush toxins and hydrate the body. And that is for everyone, regardless of activity levels and desire to have a buff body. So for those of us on bodybuilding diets, who are conscious of building muscle, water is even more important.

Regular bodybuilding workouts are also essential to maximise the effects of good bodybuilding diets. It is all very well knowing what to eat to build muscle, but if you do not combine this great new diet by building muscle mass with weight lifting exercises or other bodybuilding routines, you will not be able to build muscle fast. So do both – eat foods that build muscle, and undertake bodybuilding workouts, and you will end up with a body you will be proud of.

Are Heart Rate Monitors Accurate?

October 12, 2009 by Henry Calhoun · Leave a Comment

There are many people who are concerned about the accuracy of heart rate monitors and are therefore worried that they might not be good to use when exercising. There is in reality nothing to be worried about since a heart rate monitor will use many factors to determine the rate and if it is wrong, it is probably because someone didn’t ensure accuracy. If properly used, the results are almost always very accurate.

In 1977 the first modern heart rate monitor made for personal use was invented. This device was modeled after the standard EKG and was also designed to be that accurate. This first time a personal heart rate monitor was used was to assist a cross country skiing team with training.

Since that first heart rate monitor, all monitors have been made for accuracy. It is an essential part of the monitor. In fact, a heart rate monitor is useless without being accurate because you can simply check your own pulse and your own math to come up with the exact same information that the monitor gives you. So, there is really no way that the monitor can be inaccurate and it not be found out.

A heart rate monitor simplifies the whole process of monitoring your heart rate and ensuring that you are working to your full potential and not over exerting yourself. The whole point of the device is to save you time and to make things easier on you. If it is not accurate then you will have no use for it.

With heart rate monitors being a top selling fitness device, there has to be something right with them. If they were inaccurate then everyone would know and people would stop buying them. However, there have been some problems reported with the accuracy of some heart rate monitors. These reports, though, have prompted changes and advancement in the newer monitors now on the market.

One of the issues with earlier models was that electromagnetic waves from electronic equipment could interfere with the heart rate monitor and cause inaccurate readings. Most newer models have a feature which blocks such interference.

One of the most common issues, however, is user error. If the monitor is not put on right or used properly, then the results are going to be inaccurate. To avoid this it is imperative to read the instructions and all other literature that came with the monitoring device. This way you are sure to use it correctly.

To get the most accuracy, you should be careful as to what type of heart rate monitor you purchase. Generally speaking, the chest band type is most accurate, however, there are many kinds of models and one might work better for you than another. Before purchasing a model it is a good idea to test some out first, such as at a gym. This way you will reap the full benefits by buying the right monitor for yourself.

Gay Holidays to Bhutan

October 12, 2009 by Howie Holben · Leave a Comment

Tucked between Tibet and India in a remote region of the Himalayan Mountains, lies a tiny Buddhist kingdom called Bhutan. Visitors to this spiritually and culturally-rich country will find a simpler way of life that is largely unaltered by Western culture and modern attitudes. Every aspect of life in Bhutanese villages and towns is steeped in the age-old traditions, beliefs, customs and practices of Buddhism, which is the basis of this countrys conservative, traditional way of life.

Although Bhutan is a conservative, traditional country in most ways, folks on gay travel tours are welcomed by the warm Bhutanese people and the tariffs paid by visitors on both straight and gay vacations are used to improve life in Bhutan through education, public services and economic growth and stability. Because tourism is limited, travelers who have the opportunity to explore this mystical Buddhist kingdom should take advantage of the chance to experience the rich Bhutanese culture to its fullest.

Bhutan has no LGBT scene to speak of; therefore, a gay vacation planned to this magnificent mountain kingdom would certainly not be planned with the intent of experiencing a distinct LGBT community or visiting LGBT establishments. Of course, this is not to say that same-gender behaviors and relationships do not occur. These activities are actually common and accepted and there is a significant amount of bisexual sexual behavior practiced among Bhutanese men.

In fact, bisexual behavior among men is not considered taboo and is a commonplace occurrence that does not affect ones identity. Languages in this region do not have words for lesbian, gay or bisexual and most of the men who would perhaps be defined as bisexual in Western cultures are monastic monks or are married to women. While there is an old law outlawing same-sex sexual activity that is still technically on the books, there is no evidence that this law, which includes the possibility of life imprisonment, has ever been enforced.

Gay travel to Bhutan allows an opportunity to experience a culture that is largely untouched by the outside world and is the ideal setting for a spiritual awakening or renewal. From hiking to visiting monasteries and exploring ancient villages, Bhutan gay vacations are unlike anything you will experience anywhere else in the world.

To fully enjoy all that Bhutan offers, it is recommended that you plan your gay holidays to this majestic land very well. This will help to ensure that you are given the opportunity to discover the beauty and spirituality of this magnificent country, while respecting Bhutans natural and cultural richness.

Morocco and Gay Travel

October 12, 2009 by Howie Holben · Leave a Comment

Morocco is a popular tourist destination in northwestern Africa and is a land of rich history, deeply entrenched culture, legend and myth. Well-known as a setting for books, play and movies, this desert nation offers visitors the opportunity to explore ancient ruins, traipse across the desert on a camel, stay in a hotel made of sand and bargain with insistent rug and spice traders in old-world open air marketplaces. In many cities and towns traditional homes have been converted into guest lodgings, called riads, which often provide for a more welcoming environment for folks on a gay vacation and allow visitors to experience Moroccan life and culture up close. Morocco is a conservative Muslim country and has no scene to speak of; however other reasons to include this exotic land in your gay adventure travel are abundant, including beautiful beaches, exceptional architecture, expansive desert landscapes and the chance to meander through souks (markets) that twist and turn through narrow village streets.

Morocco is a land of legends and myths, steeped in rich history and culture, where travelers can stay in a hotel made of sand, trek across the desert on camels and bargain with spice and rug traders in old-world marketplaces. In many places homes have been converted into hotels, called riads, that are sometimes more welcoming for visitors on a gay vacation and offer visitors the opportunity to experience the life and culture of Morocco more closely. There is no definable scene in Morocco, which is a conservative Muslim country; however there are many reasons to include Morocco in your travel, including pristine beaches, ancient ruins, enticing souks (markets) that wind through narrow streets offering a variety of wares, vast desert landscapes and amazing architecture.

Morocco was once a popular vacation destination for jet set from Europe, including famous writers, composers and socialites; however, although Morocco was once known as a welcoming spot for exotic gay vacations, homosexuality was criminalized in Morocco in 1962. While the law is rarely enforced, travelers on a vacation in Morocco should be aware that same-sex conduct is illegal and is punishable by fines and six months to three years of imprisonment.

The government recently released a statement noting that increased efforts to repress homosexuality would be put in place and that homosexuality will not be tolerated; which may lead to stricter enforcement of this law. This type of intolerance and laws against same-sex conduct are not uncommon in African nations or conservative Muslim countries and does not mean that Morocco must be avoided during your gay travel.

It simply means that discretion and awareness are advised while taking a vacation in Morocco. Travelers may want to consider visiting Morocco in an organized travel tour group or planning your vacation to Morocco through a gay travel and tours agency that has particular knowledge regarding the most welcoming lodgings and locations for vacations.

Know How Rock Climbing Started

October 12, 2009 by Leslie Moore · Leave a Comment

The world history of climbing is not as ancient as some other sports. People climbed steep rocks and mountains because there was no other way out of it, but today, they indulge in it to taste adventure. Rock climbing up and down icy glaciers was part of rescue operations in the Alps.

Climbing first emerged as a sport during the latter part of 19th century from three separate areas of Europe. The first place was in the South-eastern part of Germany, close to the Czech border, in a mountain called the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. There were several climbing clubs getting formed and over 500 active climbers enjoying climbing by the year 1903.

Around the same time, rock climbing was being viewed as a sport in England. Many early climbers became the cynosure of all eyes as they attempted to climb extremely steep cliffs alone. It is here that allocating various difficulty ratings started which followed the various types of cliff formations. Climbers would meet up and share and discuss their climbing experiences, while the climbing clubs were slowly getting formed.

The third hot venue for European rock climbing came about when a 17 year old student from Munich Germany managed to perform a solo climb in the Dolomite Mountains located in northern Italy. In the United States, rock climbing and mountain climbing were viewed as similar activities, and it was not until the 1950’s that it began to emerge as a separate sport. Still much of the techniques used in were developed as a part of mountain climbing.

Modern day rock climbing has come of age with the introduction of new styles and improved equipment being constantly added. Avid rock climbers would now like to treat this more as a lifestyle than just a pastime or a sport. Another noticeable trend is the setting up of indoor climbing in urban zones. In these indoor facilities artificial rock faces are created so as to duplicate actual rock faces. The safety equipment used in the indoor arenas have made it possible to practice and experience much of the thrill and demanding nature of rock climbing without the risk.

Rock climbing requires a lot of effort, strength and determination and can never be a risk-free experience despite the plethora of safety equipment and new techniques in place. In recent times, mankind had enough to go through to survive without inventing challenges. Climbing rocks was done by force and not otherwise. The growing popularity of rock climbing speaks volumes about the modern society. One of the primary drivers of human spirit is to seek fresh challenges and it is perhaps due to his fact that this sport exists today.

GPS Changes The Way You Look At Navigation

October 12, 2009 by Peter Jordan · Leave a Comment

In times long ago, the first inhabitants of earth traveled around with only things that they could see as guides to bring them home. They would have used the sun, moon and stars to point the way for them. The good thing is that we don’t have to rely on natural elements anymore.

The invention of the compass changed navigation and made it possible for explorers to always know which direction they were heading in. Maps of the early earth helped us to keep track of where we were and where we wanted to be.

In modern times, we are lucky enough that we never really have to go back to the way things were. GPS is a new type of technology that stands for Global Positioning System. It allows us access to maps and locations that can be stored digitally in the form of a gadget about the size of a mobile phone.

GPS have been incorporated into the best automobiles as we look for ways to make travelling easier. With a GPS system located on the dashboard, drivers can find their way through street maps easier than ever before. Simply select your destination and be guided there visually and audibly.

People who have owned cars with a GPS navigation system built in would never want to revert back to a car that doesn’t have one. The reason is simple. It’s so much easier to travel somewhere you’ve never been before if you have a reliable, visual and audio guide right in front of you.

Evolution tends to make things smaller and better as we go along, and it’s the same with technology. We can store more digital information in smaller and smaller pieces, meaning we get more for less. All we need now is a GPS handheld and we’ll be able to navigate anywhere from a device that can fit into your pocket.

It’s not only when travelling that GPS can be very useful. GPS receivers can also pinpoint the location of other GPS receivers within a certain vicinity. So next time you go to a carnival with the kids, or to a public place where it could be possible to lose somebody, think about how easy it would be to find each other with GPS handheld devices.

GPS will be a very valuable possession for anybody who loves the outdoors. Activities like hiking, mountaineering, off-roading or anything out in the open can be made so much more enjoyable with a GPS handheld. Whether in your car or on you at all times, you’ll never get lost again.

Dance Offers A Rewarding Career

October 12, 2009 by Assistant Editor · Leave a Comment

Art can take many forms but one of the most compelling and physical is performance dance. Deciding that you want to pursue a career in dance is a very bold move as you discover that it is not only a job but a way of life that can be very rewarding. Most serious students that begin with dance stay in the field throughout their lives, transforming to different areas as their situations change. Here are a few of the areas where students that began as dancers, flourished into like-minded careers.

Dancers

A dancer performs in the show. Dancers are not always involved with the creative side of the production, but some do add their input when it comes to dance steps, ideas or moves. Quite often a dancer will become a choreographer or teacher, since they can do both jobs at the same time. One way to get an idea of what is involved in a dancing career and how the different areas can be combined is to go to a specialized school. There are many great theater and dance schools around the country you can go to.

Artistic Director

The person responsible for directing the dancers and setting up the artistic vision of a show is known as the artistic director. More often than not, the choreographer and artistic director is one and the same person. However, as a choreographer it is also necessary to be able to create dances and teach dancers those different styles or moves.

Technical Careers in Dance

Behind the scenes of a show, there are crews of technicians at work. The production manager, for example, is responsible for coordinating several things necessary for the show, such as the lights and set. They are also responsible for the sound during the show when the stage manage makes calls related to lighting or sound and they also enable communication between the different performers. The time between scenes and shows is short and therefore the technicians, including lighting experts and stage hands, have to work in a tightly planned schedule.

Administrative Careers in Theatre

Involvement in the theatre arts is a great way to help performances gain merit and popularity in the filing and receipt of much needed grants, public relations and researching different areas in getting the community involved with special events and fundraisers. Dancers will even travel to put on presentations just to advertise their abilities and most all love doing it.

Documentary Careers

How fascinating to be the person responsible for videotaping all sorts such as specials, documentaries, publications or just to take the video of the dancers. The name given to those who do the reconstructing of older works is dance notator. Laban and Benesh are the main forms or notators. There is the infamous critic whose presence just seems to be felt, with people waiting to hear their opinion. Many feel that the critic should either be currently dancing or at least did so previously since they could look at it from all angles and are familiar with the emotions involved.

Other dancers go on to become instructors or help with instructing classes just to be close to the business and watch young, eager children work so hard to realize a dream. The career of dance is quite special for those who have the calling and are willing to spend their lives doing exactly what they love.
